In addition to the many hours spent on club projects, the Calvert Garden Club made the following cash donations to support community organizations during the April 2023 – March 2024 fiscal year.

Marine Museum
Solomons Island
The Calvert Marine Museum is a public, non-profit, educational, regionally oriented museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, research, and interpretation of the culture and natural history of Southern Maryland. The museum is dedicated to the presentation of three themes: regional paleontology, estuarine life of the tidal Patuxent River and adjacent Chesapeake Bay, and maritime history of these waters. This grant is intended for planting a Native Garden to benefit wildlife.$750
Project EchoProject Echo provides shelter for the homeless and chronically homeless. This grant is to be used to plant ground cover on the hill adjacent to the Parking lot to assist with erosion control.$1000
Project LinusProject Linus knits and supplies blankets for needy children.$125
Calvert Animal Welfare League(CAWL)CAWL is an all volunteer, no-kill shelter in Prince Frederick. This donation will be used for food and medication.$100

Afghan WomensFunda non-profit organization based in Baltimore, MD. AWF supports several grassroots organizations that assist widows and children for education, empowerment for women, and health issues, thereby helping to mitigate the deplorable conditions under which they are forced to live.  100% of all donations go directly to the assisting organizations.$500
Promise Landing FarmIn Upper Marlboro, MD, for supplies for a Community Giving Garden project that grows food to donate to local food banks.  PLF is a non-profit, inclusive equestrian facility where people of all ages and abilities can gather and share a love of horses.  In the process, they gain an understanding of themselves and others. Adults with PTSD, children with autism and other delays have benefitted from PLF. $250
Windy Hill Middle Schoolpurchase one of seven needed KitchenAid standing mixers for use by students in the Family and Community Science Classes and in the after-school Culinary Club Activity.  Five mixers have been obtained from donations by other organizations, and the two educators who teach/sponsor these classes need two more to provide for smaller work groups, thereby ensuring safe supervision while equipment is in use. The mixers were chosen specifically for their ability to withstand multiple uses per day for many years.$640
American Land Chestnut TrustTo create a meadow of native grass and flowers that would convert a manicured lawn that requires frequent mowing into a natural area that would attract local wildlife, provide nesting structures, and provide carbon sequestration on that area.$400
Calvert High School Garden ClubSeed money to create and maintain spaces of natural beauty on the campus and to plant three existing raised beds with edible winter-sown crops.  This is the first year of the club’s existence.$500
Patuxent High School Environmental ClubTo create a green wall and a native pollinator garden on the PHS campus.  The goal of this project is to educate and encourage environmental awareness in the school community.$1000
Tidewater SchoolFor a project to create an extended growing season that will augment an existing cooking program with fresh herbs during the school year. 
This will provide opportunities to participate in the planting-to-harvest sequence and understand the farm-to-table concept.  The bulk of the funds will be used to purchase a reusable (for many years) 8’x2’ raised bed and detachable cold frame.

SMILE (Associated with seven local congregations) An ecumenical community outreach ministry committed to service. The charity is comprised of seven churches in southern Calvert County whose purpose is to establish and operate an ecumenical ministry to enable people of all denominations to work together to provide food, clothing, and other forms of assistance and support for those in need. $1,000.00
