Grants & Community Projects

The Calvert Garden Club is committed to enhancing the beauty of Calvert County and making it a wonderful place to live.  We support this mission in two key ways: financial contributions and volunteer hours dedicated to our Community Outreach Projects.

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS

CGC -MINI GRANTS

For almost 90 years, the Calvert Garden Club has contributed to the community quietly and generously. Over a decade ago, the club created the grant program to increase our support of community organizations, beautify our County, support environmentally beneficial projects and promote the appreciation of the benefits of gardening. Each year, we donate the proceeds from our annual plant sale as mini-grants to fund worthy horticultural initiatives.

Grants totaling over $25,000 have been awarded since this program began. New grant applications are accepted annually.

SUPPORTED COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECTS

Calvert Garden Club members dedicate significant time to various community service projects, some of which have been ongoing since the Club’s founding, while others are shorter-term initiatives.  The project list is updated annually or as new projects are approved.  Below is a list of our current active projects:

ART BLOOMS AT ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN & ARTS CENTER

Inspired by the long-standing tradition of Art in Bloom—where floral designers interpret visual art through flower arrangements—Calvert Garden Club has sponsored Art Blooms at Annmarie Gardens since 2010.  Held over a weekend in July or August, the event showcases art pieces alongside floral interpretations.  Our project committee collaborates with Annmarie Gardens to recruit floral designers, select artwork, and oversee installation and removal.

BOOKS IN BLOOM AT CALVERT LIBRARIES

Following the Art Blooms model, Books in Bloom brings literature to life through floral design.  In collaboration with Calvert County Libraries, our committee selects a theme, recruits floral designers, and creates displays inspired by books.  Typically held in early March, the event includes floral design demonstrations led by experienced club members.

BLUE STAR MEMORIAL

Located at the entrance to Solomon’s Island, the Blue Star Memorial is part of a national initiative by the National Garden Clubs.  Calvert Garden Club members maintain the plantings surrounding the memorial.

BOYD KING PARK AND PHILIP HOUSE GARDEN

Located on Church Street, Boyd King Park features pollinator beds designed and planted by the Club in 2018.  The adjacent historic Phillip House has a small garden that our members help maintain.  We provide hands-on assistance and work with the county to ensure the upkeep of both spaces.

GARDEN AND GROUNDS AT LINDEN

Linden, home to the Calvert Historical Society, features a public flower garden and an evergreen grove honoring past club presidents. Our committee organizes workdays to maintain the garden, refurbish plantings, and oversee the club’s irrigation system installation.

CIVIC DECORATIONS

A cherished tradition of the Calvert Garden Club is the Greening of Courthouse Square for the holiday season.  In addition to decorating the courthouse, our members adorn Linden, Boyd King Park, and other historic sites with handmade wreaths, swags, garlands, and Della Robbia arrangements.  Members contribute fresh greenery from their gardens and work together to create festive decorations, with support from county workers for installation.

NURSING CENTER

The Calvert Nursing Center provides long-term care, short-term rehabilitation, memory support, respite, and palliative care to the Calvert County community.
The Club has a long-standing commitment to the residents of the Calvert Nursing Center in Prince Frederick.  Members gather monthly to lead floral design activities, bringing joy to the residents.  Each session follows a seasonal theme, with Club members donating flowers, greenery, and materials.  The highlight of the year is our Christmas event, where residents create and decorate miniature boxwood trees, with as many Club members assisting as there are participants.  The completed arrangements brighten residents’ rooms and common areas.
